HBO recently confirmed it is developing a television adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, set after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3, with The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin at the helm. Despite the project’s direct ties to the hit RPG, it was revealed that Larian Studios—the developer behind the game—has been excluded from the production, sparking immediate backlash from fans and internal concern regarding the show’s creative direction.
The Corporate Disconnect: Why Larian Is Out
The exclusion of Larian Studios stems from the nature of the intellectual property. Baldur’s Gate is a Dungeons & Dragons property; therefore, the rights are held by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, not the game developers. The upcoming HBO series is a direct collaboration between the network and Hasbro, effectively bypassing the team that defined the modern identity of the franchise.
Larian’s Stance: From CEO to Publishing Director
Reactions within Larian have been measured but pointed. CEO Swen Vincke revealed that Craig Mazin has reached out to the studio to discuss the project, suggesting a potential channel for feedback. Vincke expressed curiosity regarding how HBO intends to handle the game’s multiple endings and player-driven choices.
Michael Douse, Larian’s publishing director, took a more protective tone regarding the writing staff. “I’ve spent the last 8 to 10 years of my life with the writers & creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 and they’re the most incredible storytellers & creators in the space,” Douse stated on social media. “I genuinely don’t think anyone can trump our writers. My only hope is that they get both the credit deserved & the characters are represented at the same level as the game.”
Fan Skepticism and the “Cynical” Adaptation Risk
The fan community has reacted with widespread skepticism, largely rejecting the prospect of an adaptation that canonizes specific player choices while sidelining the original creative team. Critics argue that Dungeons & Dragons is a vast universe, and anchoring a show specifically to the aftermath of Baldur’s Gate 3 feels like a cynical attempt to capitalize on the game’s massive success rather than an earnest exploration of the lore.
The concern is that a studio-led adaptation may fail to capture the nuance that made the source material resonate with millions.
