Vantom stands as the most formidable Act 1 boss in Slay the Spire 2, acting as a significant skill check for new players; however, by prioritizing multi-hit attacks over raw damage, you can dismantle this encounter without needing to reset your run.
Mastering the Slippery Mechanic

The primary hurdle when facing Vantom is its “Slippery” status effect. In solo play, Vantom begins the combat with nine stacks of Slippery, meaning your first nine hits will only deal 1 damage each, regardless of the card’s actual power. While enemy stats scale in co-op, the core strategy remains identical: focus on the volume of attacks rather than the damage output of individual strikes.
If your deck is built entirely around singular, heavy-hitting cards, Vantom will effectively neutralize your offensive potential for the first few turns. It is crucial to scout your map early; once you identify Vantom as your Act 1 boss, prioritize drafting cards that help you peel away those Slippery stacks quickly.
Optimal Card Strategy and Potions

To bypass the Slippery defense, look for cards like Twin Strike, which provide multiple hits for a single energy cost. While low-cost single-hit attacks are a functional fallback, they force the fight to drag on, giving Vantom more time to ramp up its damage.
Regarding consumables, avoid burning your Duplication potions early, as they are better reserved for later acts. Conversely, an attack potion is a strategic asset here: it provides a free attack to help chip away at the Slippery stacks and adds a new card to your deck for the remainder of the battle.
Managing Damage Cycles and Wounds

Vantom’s threat level increases as the fight progresses. Its attack pattern operates in cycles, starting at a manageable seven damage and escalating to nearly 30 damage per turn. Simultaneously, Vantom will contaminate your deck with unplayable Wound cards, severely limiting your hand utility.
Since you receive a full heal upon completing the act, do not panic if your health bar takes a beating. Instead, track Vantom’s attack cycle closely. When you see the boss preparing its high-damage phases, shift your focus from aggression to a defensive stance to mitigate the incoming burst damage from its tail attacks.
