Magic: The Gathering is ditching the cutthroat competition for cooperative play with the new “Turtle Team-Up” set, a TMNT-themed box that pits two to four players against a series of iconic villains.

A Cooperative Twist on Classic Magic
Many tabletop enthusiasts enjoy the “players vs. the board” dynamic found in games like Arkham Horror or Pandemic. This structure prevents the social friction of thrashing your friends, allowing the game’s mechanics to serve as the common enemy. While co-op games often face the “quarterbacking” dilemma—where experienced players dictate moves to novices—”Turtle Team-Up” offers a refreshing, accessible entry point for all skill levels.
The set includes four 60-card decks, each themed after one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, alongside a dedicated deck for bosses and events. While players can customize these decks with booster pack cards, the pre-constructed lists are meticulously balanced for synergy and fairness.
Gameplay Mechanics: Scaling the Challenge
The game follows standard Magic rules, but with a collaborative goal. Players share a single life total—tracked by shell-shaped tokens and pizza-slice counters—and must work together to defeat a gauntlet of bosses. The difficulty ramps up dynamically: after defeating a boss, the next round introduces two bosses simultaneously, eventually culminating in a three-boss finale.
Events and boss abilities add layers of complexity, from forcing discards to summoning Foot Clan ninjas to defend the villains. Despite these threats, the game remains approachable, encouraging players to combine their unique deck strengths to overcome obstacles.

Synergy and Strategy
Teamwork is the key to victory. For instance, the April O’Neil card acts as a powerful engine for Michelangelo’s deck, generating Mutagen tokens that provide +1/+1 counters. When players coordinate their mana usage—such as helping a teammate pay for high-cost cards like Casey Jones, Asphalt Hooligan—they can unleash devastating damage combos that clear the board of bosses.
Rather than focusing purely on survival, the game encourages players to compete for high scores based on turn counts. This design caters perfectly to younger players or those seeking a nostalgic, low-pressure experience without the frustration of repeated losses.
