FF16 Star Ralph Ineson: Playing Galactus Was Like F1 Racing

2 years ago (Last updated: 2 weeks ago)

Actor Ralph Ineson, known for his iconic voice work as Cid in Final Fantasy XVI and Lorath in Diablo IV, revealed that portraying the cosmic villain Galactus in Fantastic Four: First Steps required a literal pit crew to keep him cool inside an enormous, sweltering costume.

A High-Maintenance Cosmic Entity

While Marvel enthusiasts have caught only brief glimpses of Galactus in promotional trailers, the character is set to make his grand debut as the movie hits theaters this week. Ineson explained that because Galactus is a massive cosmic force, the production relied on a practical approach rather than relying solely on CGI. This meant the actor had to endure long hours inside a massive, unventilated suit, leading to an experience he humorously compared to the high-stakes environment of Formula 1 racing.

The “Pit Crew” Experience

The lack of built-in climate control in the suit necessitated a dedicated team tasked with preventing the actor from overheating. In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Ineson detailed the intense process of working on set, noting that the costume was so restrictive that he required constant assistance between takes.

“It became quite a production,” Ineson said. “I had a pit team like a Formula 1 car. So I’d have about six or eight people around me all the time, keeping me cool in between takes. So that would involve taking the gauntlets off, taking the helmet off, and just trying to keep cool with the fans blowing on me.”

Practical Magic on Set

Despite the physical demands and the discomfort of the costume, Ineson emphasized that the process was “great fun.” The production team utilized miniature sets to capture the scale of the planet-eating villain, allowing for more practical performance rather than a heavy reliance on digital effects.

As Fantastic Four: First Steps prepares for its theatrical release on Friday, July 25, early buzz suggests the film provides the most compelling big-screen iteration of the iconic superhero team to date.
