Disney unveiled the first official teaser for its live-action Moana remake on November 17, drawing immediate criticism for visuals that many viewers are describing as artificial and overly reliant on digital effects.
A Shot-for-Shot Remake That Feels Artificial
The upcoming film, which stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and sees Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui, aims to be a near-perfect recreation of the 2016 animated original. However, the attempt to translate the vibrant, stylized animation into a live-action format has left many fans underwhelmed. Rather than feeling like a cinematic experience featuring real actors in authentic locations, significant portions of the footage resemble an Unreal Engine fan project, creating a jarring disconnect between the human performances and their digital environment.
CGI Concerns and the “Uncanny Valley”
The visual quality has become a primary point of contention. One specific sequence, featuring Maui leaping from a cliff, has been widely criticized for its lackluster rendering, with some observers noting it bears a striking resemblance to low-quality AI-generated content. While certain environmental shots—such as those involving boats and marine life—show promise, the overall aesthetic remains inconsistent. Additionally, the decision to render Heihei the chicken as a fully computer-generated character has been met with skepticism, with many questioning why a practical, real-world animal was not utilized instead.
Disney’s Risky Remake Strategy
This release comes at a volatile time for Disney’s live-action division. Last year’s Snow White remake suffered a disastrous reception due to its character designs, leading to significant financial losses and the cancellation of other planned projects. Conversely, the recent success of the Lilo & Stitch remake suggests that audiences are still willing to engage with these adaptations, provided the execution meets a certain standard. Whether this new iteration of Moana can overcome its initial negative reception remains to be seen when it hits theaters on July 10, 2026.
