Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlit a television adaptation of Life Is Strange on Friday, tapping The End of the F***ing World creator Charlie Covell to lead the project. Despite the high-profile production team, Christian Divine, a writer from the original game, confirmed that the developers at Don’t Nod have been entirely excluded from the creative process.
A High-Stakes Production Without Original Input
While rumors regarding a Life Is Strange adaptation have circulated since 2016, the project finally gained momentum last week. Amazon MGM confirmed the series will center on the journey of Max Caulfield, the student gifted with the ability to rewind time. The production features a notable roster of industry veterans, including executive producers from Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap—the studio behind Barbie and Saltburn. Story Kitchen, led by Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg, is also currently developing Amazon’s Tomb Raider series.
Creators Express Frustration Over Exclusion
Despite the star-studded team behind the cameras, the absence of the game’s original architects has sparked immediate controversy. Christian Divine, who also contributed to Deus Ex, took to X to highlight the disconnect, stating, “The only people not involved are the creators.” When engaging with followers regarding the announcement, Divine sardonically referenced the classic film Chinatown, implying a sense of resignation regarding the studio’s decision to bypass the original team.
The Challenges of Game Adaptations
The exclusion of original creators is a frequent point of contention in media adaptations. Translating narrative-driven games—which rely heavily on player choice—into a linear television format often requires significant departures from the source material. This creative friction is a common industry struggle, leading some legendary creators, such as Alan Moore, to distance themselves entirely from adaptations of their work to avoid the emotional toll of seeing their “darlings” altered. As production moves forward, the lack of involvement from Don’t Nod will likely remain a focal point for die-hard fans, potentially serving as a primary critique for any creative choices that diverge from the beloved source material.
