Jon M. Chu, the director behind Wicked, is set to helm the live-action adaptation of the smash-hit co-op game Split Fiction, with Sydney Sweeney attached to star and the Deadpool & Wolverine writing duo penning the script.
A Hollywood Bidding War Leads to Big Talent
Following a fierce bidding war for the film rights to EA and Hazelight’s Split Fiction, which Variety first reported on March 21, the project is officially gaining momentum. The game has proven to be a massive commercial and critical success, boasting over 250,000 concurrent players on Steam and moving more than 2 million units in its debut week alone. With Story Kitchen collaborating with EA and Hazelight, the production is now assembling a high-profile creative team.
Star Power and Proven Screenwriters
Reports from Variety on Thursday confirm that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney will lead the cast. While it remains unconfirmed whether she will portray the character Zoe or Mio, it has been revealed that Sweeney will also serve as an executive producer on the project. Bringing sharp comedic and action sensibilities to the table, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick—the writers responsible for the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine—have been tapped to write the screenplay.
Story Kitchen’s Growing Gaming Portfolio
The director’s chair will be filled by Jon M. Chu, known for his work on Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked. This project marks another significant venture for production company Story Kitchen, which has solidified its reputation in the gaming adaptation space. Having played a key role in the success of the live-action Sonic films and Netflix’s Tomb Raider animated series, the company continues to expand its catalog.
Story Kitchen is currently involved in several other high-profile projects, including a Streets of Rage film and an adaptation of It Takes Two, another Hazelight title published by EA. While the It Takes Two project has faced development hurdles at Amazon, Split Fiction is currently moving through the production pipeline at a rapid pace.
