Marvel Cuts John Malkovich from Fantastic Four: First Steps

1 year ago (Last updated: 2 weeks ago)

Director Matt Shakman has officially confirmed that legendary actor John Malkovich will no longer appear in Fantastic Four: First Steps, as his role as the villain Red Ghost was excised from the final cut of the film.

A Difficult Decision for the MCU

Despite being confirmed for the project months ago and even making a brief appearance in the film’s debut trailer this past February, Malkovich’s contribution has been left on the cutting room floor. Shakman explained to Variety that the decision was driven by the logistical challenges of balancing an incredibly dense narrative.

“There were a lot of things that ultimately ended up hitting the cutting room floor,” Shakman stated. “When we were building a ’60s retro-future world, introducing all of these villains, introducing these four main characters as a group, as well as individually, introducing the idea of a child — there was a lot of stuff to balance in this movie and some things had to go ultimately in terms of shaping the film for its final version.”

Why Red Ghost Didn’t Make the Cut

The character of Red Ghost was originally slated to appear in a “lengthy” sequence detailing the Fantastic Four’s early days as superheroes. This specific segment featured a high-stakes battle between the team and Red Ghost’s iconic squad of Super-Apes. Ultimately, the production team determined that the storyline was not as essential to the core narrative as the development of the ensemble cast.

Shakman Reflects on the Omission

Shakman expressed personal disappointment regarding the removal, citing his deep professional respect for the actor. “It was heartbreaking not to include him in the final version of the movie because he’s one of my very favorite humans and one of my biggest inspirations,” the director noted. “As a person who walks the line between theater and film and television, there’s no one who is more inspiring than the founder of Steppenwolf Theater Company. I was honored he came to play.”

While fans might hope to see the lost footage in a future director’s cut or as part of the home media special features, there is currently no word on whether the character will be reintroduced in a later installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fantastic Four: First Steps is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 25.
