Days after announcing a significant workforce reduction within the 2XKO team, Riot Games has publicly reaffirmed its dedication to the project by unveiling two new playable characters and promising key gameplay refinements.

Doubling Down on the Fighting Game Community
In a blog post titled “What’s Next + New Champs,” game director Shaun Rivera addressed the team’s future, stating that Riot is “doubling down on building for the FGC that loves this genre.” Despite the recent layoffs, the studio intends to maintain the game’s high skill ceiling while addressing specific balance outliers.

“We’ve seen the conversation about what our core gameplay could or should look like in the future,” Rivera noted. “We love that 2XKO is fast-paced, allowing your reactions and creativity to shine while providing a ton of depth to dig into. The skill ceiling of this game is high, and that’s where it’s gonna stay.”
Refining the Meta and Local Play
Riot plans to implement balance updates aimed at defining clearer strengths and weaknesses for each champion. Rivera specifically pointed to Ekko and Yasuo as characters whose current weaknesses are not sufficiently apparent at the highest levels of competitive play.
Beyond balance, the team is looking to bolster the grassroots competitive scene. Following the Challenger event at Genesis X3, Riot plans to introduce exclusive in-game rewards for local tournaments, aiming to incentivize community participation at the ground level.
Additionally, the developers confirmed they are working on a local duos mode. While team-based play is currently limited to online environments, the studio aims to bring the “couch co-op” experience to 2XKO to improve accessibility.

New Roster Additions: Akali and Senna
The update provided a first look at two upcoming fighters. Akali is described as a “sharp, stylish ninja” focused on precision, while Senna brings a heavy-hitting dynamic to the roster, utilizing a massive cannon and a wraith-form rushdown ability.
While the blog post included brief work-in-progress clips of both characters, Riot has not yet provided a concrete release date for their arrival in the game.
Despite the developer’s outward confidence, questions remain regarding the long-term roadmap for 2XKO following the restructuring. The industry continues to monitor whether this current momentum can be sustained once the studio’s pre-prepared content pipeline is exhausted.
