Nathan Fillion officially announced at Awesome Con that an animated revival of the cult-classic series Firefly has entered advanced production, with the original cast set to return—minus creator Joss Whedon.

The Crew Reassembles for a New Mission
The news broke during a live recording of the Once We Were Spacemen podcast. With the exception of the late Ron Glass, who passed away in 2016, the core cast members are expected to reprise their iconic roles. While Adam Baldwin’s absence from the live event initially sparked questions, Fillion confirmed that Baldwin is on board to lend his voice to the project.
Moving Forward Without Joss Whedon
A significant aspect of this revival is the deliberate exclusion of Joss Whedon from the production process. While Whedon has reportedly given the project his “blessing,” he remains sidelined following the 2021 allegations of sexual harassment and professional misconduct, which were corroborated by numerous former collaborators. The production team has opted to distance the new series from the creator of the original 2002 show.
Production and Distribution Strategy
The project is currently being spearheaded by Fillion’s production company, Collision33, in collaboration with 20th Television Animation, a subsidiary of the franchise’s rights holder, Disney. According to reports, the scripts are already finalized. The production team is preparing to shop the fully developed package to potential buyers and streaming platforms in the immediate future.
Will the Revival Actually Take Off?
Fillion expressed gratitude for the fanbase, noting, “The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve.” Despite this optimism, the industry remains cautious; the recent cancellation of the projected Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale sequel serves as a reminder that a project is not guaranteed until a network or streamer officially signs the deal.
