Legendary actor Ron Perlman, the voice behind the iconic “War. War never changes” line in the 1997 original Fallout, revealed he was paid only $40 and a sandwich for his contribution to what would eventually become a massive global franchise.
A Franchise Built on a Mystery
Despite being a staple of the Fallout series, Ron Perlman admits he has never actually played the games and remains largely disconnected from the franchise’s legacy. In a recent appearance on the Joe Vulpis Podcast, the Hellboy star confessed that he is not a gamer and wouldn’t even know how to operate the hardware required to play them. To Perlman, the entire Fallout phenomenon remains a complete mystery.
The Voice Behind the Nuclear Wasteland
Perlman’s gravelly narration has defined the opening sequences of the games, setting the stage for the geopolitical tensions and nuclear devastation that define the Fallout universe. From the haunting lines in the original game—detailing how the planet was reduced to cinders in 2077—to his recurring presence throughout the series, his voice has become synonymous with the franchise’s post-apocalyptic identity.
From $40 to Pop Culture Icon
Reflecting on the early days of the project, Perlman recalled that the initial session in the 1990s was far from a high-profile gig. “They invited me to do the very first Fallout back in the ’90s, I think,” he explained. “They gave me $40 and a sandwich. And a year and a half later, I get a call. ‘Hey, you remember Fallout?’ ‘No.’”
The Future of Fallout
Today, Fallout stands as a juggernaut in both gaming and television, bolstered by the massive success of the Amazon Prime adaptation. Perlman admitted he did not foresee the series achieving this level of cultural dominance. While the actor has yet to appear in the live-action show, fans continue to speculate about a potential cameo. With filming for the third season of the series slated to begin later this year, there remains an open window for the voice of Fallout to make an appearance on screen.
