The Academy Awards returned with the usual blend of cinematic celebration and viral drama, as KPop Demon Hunters’ shortened speech, a rare category tie, and jabs at Timothée Chalamet defined this year’s ceremony.

The Speech Controversy: Cutting Off the Winners
Frustration erupted among fans after the recipients of Best Original Song, KPop Demon Hunters, were abruptly played off the stage. After singer Ejae passed the microphone to co-writer Yu Han Lee, the music swelled, cutting their acceptance speech short after only about a minute. Viewers quickly labeled the move as disrespectful, noting that other winners appeared to receive more leeway.
Addressing the backlash, Walt Disney Television’s Rob Mills told Variety that the organization is re-evaluating its protocol. “We look at everything and figure out what is the most elegant solution,” Mills said, acknowledging the difficulty of balancing time constraints with the significance of a winner’s singular moment on stage. Options being considered for future ceremonies include designating a single speaker or moving segments of the speeches to social media feeds.
Conan O’Brien’s Jab at Timothée Chalamet
Host Conan O’Brien didn’t shy away from recent controversies, specifically targeting Marty Supreme star Timothée Chalamet during his opening monologue. O’Brien joked that security was “extremely tight” this year due to potential “attacks from both the opera and ballet communities”—a direct reference to Chalamet’s recent, widely criticized comments claiming “no one cares” about those classical arts. The camera cut to a grinning Chalamet, who appeared largely unfazed by the public roasting.
A Rare Tie and the ‘Sinners’ Snub
History was made when the Oscars saw its first tie since 2013. The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva split the vote for Best Live-Action Short Film. Presenter Kumail Nanjiani lightened the mood, joking about the irregularity of the event and teasing that the category would take “twice as long” as the others.
Meanwhile, the night was marked by intense competition between One Battle After Another and Sinners. While One Battle After Another secured the coveted Best Picture trophy, Sinners fans were left disappointed despite the film’s record-breaking 16 nominations. Sinners still managed to walk away with four awards, including a Best Actor win for Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance as brothers Smoke and Stack, alongside wins for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography.
