Team Ninja officially announced the development of a brand-new Dead or Alive fighting game during today’s Sony State of Play broadcast, marking the franchise’s return after a five-year hiatus.

A New Chapter for the Iconic Series
The studio unveiled a brief teaser trailer, promising that “the dawn of a new chapter awaits.” While the announcement did not explicitly name the title, it is widely expected to be Dead or Alive 7, serving as the direct successor to 2019’s DOA6.
Bridging the Gap: DOA6 Last Round
Although the series is approaching its 30th anniversary in 2026, the next major entry appears to be in the early stages of development. To maintain momentum, Team Ninja is launching Dead or Alive 6: Last Round on June 26. This updated version will bundle all original DLC and introduce a new photo mode, with plans to support the game through additional post-launch character releases.

The Competitive Landscape
The timing of this revival is strategic. With established rivals like Tekken currently facing friction within their player base, the 3D fighting game genre is ripe for a shake-up. Industry observers are already speculating that a potential showdown between the new Dead or Alive and Virtua Fighter could become the defining narrative for the fighting game community in the coming year.
