Bungie has officially acknowledged that the recent audio adjustment in Marathon, which significantly increased the distance at which gunfire and explosions are audible, was an “overcorrection” that negatively impacted player experience. Following widespread community backlash, the development team confirmed they are working on a fix to recalibrate sound ranges in an upcoming patch.
The Problem with Too Much Noise
In the high-stakes environment of Marathon, silence is a vital tactical resource. Making noise typically alerts nearby threats, turning a stealthy run into a desperate fight for survival. However, a recent update silently expanded the detection radius for combat sounds, leaving players frustrated by the constant pressure of being located across the map.
The feedback from the player base has been overwhelmingly negative. Many users have expressed that the change forces players into unwanted PvP engagements, effectively stripping away the ability to maneuver tactically. As one Reddit user, Electrical_Regret537, pointed out, the current state of the game makes it nearly impossible to complete objectives without being forced into a cycle of constant combat until the final extraction.
Bungie’s Response: A Promise to Adjust
Addressing the community concerns via Bluesky, the Marathon development team admitted the adjustment went too far. “We recognize that this was an overcorrection and will pull things back in a way that maintains your ability to hear each other’s actions, but not at a distance that feels excessive,” the team stated.
In a subsequent clarification, Bungie explained that the original intent behind the update was to provide players with more situational awareness regarding field activity. They acknowledged the execution failed to meet expectations, promising that the upcoming balance pass will aim for a “more comfortable and intuitive” audio distance for all players.

While Bungie has not provided a specific release date for the corrective update, the developer emphasized that they are actively monitoring the situation. Given the intensity of the community’s reaction to the current audio settings, a fix is expected to be prioritized in the near future to restore the intended gameplay loop.
