Peacock’s Twisted Metal returns for its second season on July 31, bringing Anthony Mackie back to the Divided States of America with a narrative shift that finally leans heavily into the iconic car combat tournament established by the original video game franchise.
The Tournament Finally Begins
After navigating a landscape filled with homicidal clowns and cultist preachers in season one, delivery driver John Doe (Anthony Mackie) is set to face the true test of the series. Following the revelation that his mysterious delivery for Raven (Neve Campbell) was merely a precursor to the legendary death match, the second season will dedicate its latter half to the high-stakes tournament fans have been waiting for. With an expanded order of 12 episodes—up from the 10 featured in the debut season—the show promises a more direct adaptation of the source material’s core premise.
Iconic Game Characters Join the Chaos
The upcoming season marks a significant expansion of the roster, introducing two of the most recognizable figures from the game series. Richard de Klerk has been cast as Mr. Grimm, the soul-stealing biker who has appeared in every single Twisted Metal title. Alongside him, the show will finally debut Axel, the franchise’s most distinct character. Known for being physically fused between two massive wheels, Axel was notably absent from the first season due to the complex logistical challenges of bringing such a surreal design to live-action.
Adapting Axel for Live-Action
Showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith admitted that translating Axel to the screen was a daunting creative hurdle, questioning both the practical design and the character’s origin. Smith clarified that the version appearing in season two will be a “1.0 version,” featuring a makeshift, grounded aesthetic rather than a polished, futuristic look. This iteration suggests an ongoing evolution for the character within the show’s universe, setting the stage for the chaotic, high-octane mayhem that defines the Twisted Metal experience.
