Nintendo dropped a surprise Sunday “Direct” presentation revealing a fresh trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, officially confirming that Yoshi and Birdo will make their cinematic debut when the film hits theaters on April 1.
Expanding the Mushroom Kingdom Roster
While the trailer introduces fan-favorite characters to the franchise, details regarding their voice talent remain under wraps. Unlike the previously announced star-studded cast, Nintendo has yet to confirm if high-profile celebrities will be lending their voices to these new additions.
The footage provides a fleeting look at an action sequence featuring Birdo and Princess Peach. Although the clip is brief, it signals a significant expansion of the film’s ensemble. These characters join a growing lineup that already includes Bowser Jr. and Rosalina, both of whom were teased in the initial trailer last year. The latest look also features glimpses of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, leaving fans to speculate whether these are distinct characters or the result of a mid-adventure transformation.
Production Status and Final Touches
Following the trailer reveal, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri confirmed that the film’s animation phase is complete. The project has now moved into post-production, with the team shifting its focus to sound design and the final musical score.
Despite the production progress, some visual design choices continue to stir debate among fans, particularly the stylized, bulging eyes of Bowser Jr. With the Super Mario Galaxy Movie premiere set for April 1, it remains to be seen if any minor visual adjustments will occur before the final release, or if Nintendo has further surprises in store for the coming months.
