Hollywood is officially heading to The Lands Between, as A24 has announced a live-action adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2022 action-RPG Elden Ring, with Ex Machina director Alex Garland set to helm the project.

Can A24 Succeed Where Others Failed?
With over 30 million copies sold, Elden Ring is a financial juggernaut, making it a prime candidate for a big-screen transition. However, the track record for video game adaptations is notoriously uneven. While hits like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have thrived, more mature-skewing projects like Borderlands have struggled to resonate with audiences, leaving fans questioning if the game’s cryptic, brutal atmosphere can successfully survive the jump to live-action.
The Creative Team Behind the Tarnished
Details regarding the project’s release date remain under wraps, but the production roster is already sparking industry buzz. The team includes industry veterans Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis. Notably, George R. R. Martin is attached to the project. Having collaborated with FromSoftware on the game’s original world-building and lore, Martin’s involvement adds a layer of narrative credibility, even as fans jokingly note his continued focus on projects that keep him from finishing The Winds of Winter.
Alex Garland’s Vision for The Lands Between
Director Alex Garland, known for his work on Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War, brings a unique, often unsettling stylistic sensibility to the director’s chair. Given A24’s reputation for allowing directors high levels of creative freedom, this adaptation may diverge significantly from the conventional, mass-market blockbuster formula. Garland’s history with atmospheric, dialogue-light storytelling suggests an approach that could lean heavily into the haunting mythology and grotesque horror inherent to Elden Ring.
The Challenges of Adapting FromSoftware
Translating FromSoftware’s extravagant creature designs into a live-action medium presents a significant hurdle, requiring either massive VFX budgets or highly stylized practical effects. While some have wondered if a director like Guillermo del Toro might have been a more natural fit for the game’s dark fantasy aesthetic, the success of films like Godzilla Minus One proves that visionary direction can overcome budget constraints. Currently, there is no word on what level of involvement FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki—the architect of the game’s unique narrative style—will have in the production.
