In a major shift for the Star Wars franchise, The Bear star Jeremy Allen White is set to portray an all-grown-up, physically imposing version of Rotta the Hutt in the upcoming theatrical film The Mandalorian and Grogu. Director Jon Favreau confirmed that the character, once the kidnapped infant from The Clone Wars, has transformed into a battle-hardened gladiator, trading his species’ sedentary reputation for a disciplined, warrior lifestyle.
From Baby Hutt to Galactic Gladiator
Rotta the Hutt first captured audience attention a decade before Grogu arrived, serving as the central figure in a high-stakes kidnapping plot during the animated Clone Wars series. While fans remember him as a helpless infant rescued by the Jedi, his return to the screen shows a radically different creature. Far from the typical, sluggish crime lords associated with the Hutt clan, this iteration of Rotta is heavily muscled, dual-wielding battle axes and displaying an intense, gym-honed physique.
The Adonis Creed of the Star Wars Universe
Jon Favreau draws a compelling parallel between this new Rotta and the protagonist of the Rocky spin-off trilogy. According to the director, the narrative focus lies in the burden of legacy. Favreau describes Rotta’s trajectory as similar to that of Adonis “Donnie” Creed, the son of the legendary Apollo Creed, as the character grapples with the weight of his father Jabba’s infamous reputation. “When you’re trying to establish yourself and your name is famous, when you’re Jabba The Hutt’s kid, what does that do?” Favreau told Empire. “How has that affected his trajectory? I get a kick out of that.”
Expanding the Live-Action Lore
The integration of Rotta into the live-action fold continues Disney’s trend of mining the expanded Star Wars universe for cinematic depth. Much like the transition of Cad Bane into The Book of Boba Fett or the live-action debut of Grand Admiral Thrawn, Rotta’s inclusion bridges the gap between animated history and current theatrical projects. Jeremy Allen White, who reportedly refined his “Huttese” for the role, suggests that this version of the character will possess a more sophisticated vocabulary than his predecessors.
A Potential Reunion with Ahsoka?
With Rotta’s return, speculation is mounting regarding his interaction with other legacy characters. Ahsoka Tano, the Jedi who originally saved Rotta from his kidnappers, has become a cornerstone of the live-action series. Given White’s hints that Rotta’s role may extend beyond a single feature film, fans are already theorizing about a potential on-screen reunion between the warrior Hutt and his former savior. The full scope of this transformation will be revealed when The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters this May.
