Amazon is officially bringing the 2018 God of War Norse saga to life, and while cameras haven’t started rolling yet, the highly anticipated live-action adaptation is already filling out its roster. Production is currently in the pre-production phase under the guidance of executive producer and game director Cory Barlog, and as the project moves forward, the star-studded cast list continues to grow.
The Leads: Kratos and Atreus
Stepping into the iconic role of Kratos is Ryan Hurst. While fans may recognize Hurst for his work as Opie in Sons of Anarchy or Beta in The Walking Dead—and his recent role as Miles in Netflix’s The Abandons—he is no stranger to the franchise, having voiced Thor in the video games. His casting has sparked significant discussion, as this marks a shift in the character’s portrayal.
Joining him as his son, Atreus, is child actor Callum Vinson. Despite his youth, Vinson brings an impressive resume to the table, including roles in Poker Face and Chucky. He is also slated to appear as a young Jason Voorhees in the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel, Crystal Lake.
Returning Voices and Mythical Figures
In a treat for long-time fans, Alastair Duncan is the only performer currently confirmed to reprise his role from the games, returning to portray the disembodied head of Mimir. His critically acclaimed performance in the games sets a high bar for the series.
The dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri will be portrayed by Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld, The Witcher) and Jeff Gulka (The X-Files), respectively. Meanwhile, the series is taking creative liberties with the timeline; Heimdall, who did not appear until the Ragnarök game, is set to debut in the first season, played by Max Parker (Vampire Academy).
The Gods of Asgard
With Ryan Hurst taking on the role of Kratos, the mantle of Thor has passed to Icelandic actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson. Known for his intimidating presence as Mr. Drummond in Severance, Ólafsson is set to bring a new intensity to the god of thunder. He will be joined by Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies), who has been cast as Sif, the wife of Thor.
Perhaps the most significant casting announcement is the legendary Mandy Patinkin as the All-Father, Odin. Patinkin, whose storied career ranges from theater to his iconic turn as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride, will take on the role of the primary antagonist of the Norse pantheon.
The Primary Antagonist
Rounding out the major players is Deadpool actor Ed Skrein, who is set to portray Baldur. As the cursed son of Odin and Freya, Baldur serves as the central villain of the 2018 game, acting as the primary catalyst for the conflict that defines the narrative. With his role confirmed, viewers can expect a high-stakes confrontation early in the show’s run.
While the cast is shaping up, several pivotal roles—including Freya and Angrboda—remain unannounced. Amazon has yet to set an official release date, but with the production team currently deep in development, the stage is set for a massive expansion of the God of War universe.
