Laurence Fishburne, the actor who defined the role of Morpheus, revealed on “The View” this week that he actively offered his services for 2021’s The Matrix: Resurrections, but was rebuffed by the production team.

The Mystery Behind Morpheus’ Absence
While franchise staples Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprised their iconic roles for the fourth installment, Fishburne was notably absent. His character, Morpheus, was instead reimagined through Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played an alternate version of the mentor figure. This creative pivot left many fans disappointed and questioning why the original star was sidelined.
Fishburne’s Candid Admission
During his appearance on “The View,” host Sara Haines questioned if Fishburne would consider joining the recently announced fifth Matrix film. The actor’s response shed new light on his history with the franchise, stating, “It depends on the circumstances — who is involved, how well the script has been written, if they offer me.”
Fishburne then dropped a bombshell regarding the previous film: “You know, I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn’t respond well.” He clarified that he had made his interest known, but for reasons undisclosed by the studio, the collaboration never materialized. “It’s not like I didn’t say, ‘Oh, I’d like to offer my services.’ I did. And for whatever reason, that didn’t happen.”
Looking Toward the Future
This admission contrasts with his more diplomatic public comments from 2021, where he simply stated he had “not been invited” and wished the production well. Now, with a fifth movie in development, the conversation has shifted.
Hostin and Haines expressed clear support for his return, with Haines suggesting that his involvement could be the deciding factor in the quality of the next chapter. As the franchise moves forward, the ball appears to be in the court of the producers to determine if they will finally accept the offer from the man who helped build the Matrix legacy.
