Showrunner Chinaka Hodge has confirmed that Disney Plus’s Ironheart is accessible to all viewers, but the series’ first three episodes harbor a deep, surprising connection to the very start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shedding new light on the legacy of a classic villain.
A Fresh Start with Hidden Ties
The series follows Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) as she navigates a classic origin story: rebuilding her life after tragedy, facing supernatural threats, and refining her high-tech armor. However, the narrative takes a sharp turn when Riri encounters a brilliant but eccentric ally. After tracking down a character named McGillicuddy (Alden Ehrenreich) to his bunker filled with black-market weaponry, Riri discovers his true identity: Ezekiel Stane. To make matters more intense, he reveals he is carrying his father’s remains in a simple Ziploc bag—the ashes of none other than Obadiah Stane.
Connecting to the Iron Monger
Longtime MCU fans will recognize Obadiah (Jeff Bridges) as the cold-blooded Stark Industries executive from 2008’s Iron Man, who orchestrated Tony Stark’s kidnapping and attempted to rip the arc reactor from his chest. In the show, Ezekiel notes that he is 36 years old, placing him at approximately 17 years old when his father met his demise at the hands of Iron Man. This timeline provides a chilling context for his current obsession with hoarding weapons of mass destruction.
Expanding the MCU Lore
Ezekiel reveals to Riri that he and his father lacked a close relationship, explaining his unconventional method of carrying his father’s ashes. He also makes direct references to Obadiah’s secret life as the Iron Monger. Since the world at large never learned the truth about Obadiah’s villainous alter ego during the events of the first Iron Man, this suggests that Ezekiel either possessed intimate knowledge of his father’s criminal activities or uncovered the truth long after the fact. Ultimately, Ironheart successfully weaves this piece of MCU history into its narrative without letting it overshadow Riri’s own journey.
