Angela Sant’Albano, the voice behind Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem, revealed she was forced to improvise a grueling, multi-minute death sequence during her audition, complete with real-time prompts from the casting director.
The Audition from Hell
Voice acting is often perceived as a straightforward gig, but the reality of landing a major role in a survival horror title requires intense physical and vocal endurance. Sant’Albano discovered this firsthand when casting director Kate Saxon pushed her to the limit during her audition process.
“We did a couple of scenes that Capcom had already written, and then one of the improv prompts was, ‘I need you to die for about two to three minutes, and I’m going to time you,'” Sant’Albano explained in an interview with Polygon. “It had to be a slow burn of a death, concluding with a final death cry.”
The challenge didn’t end with the timer. As Sant’Albano performed the prolonged sequence, Saxon layered in additional stressors to test her reactivity, shouting out instructions like, “Now a zombie has bitten your left leg.”
Beyond the Voice: Motion Capture Hurdles
While Sant’Albano has appeared in various television roles, Resident Evil Requiem marks her debut in the gaming industry. Transitioning to motion capture introduced an entirely new set of logistical challenges, particularly regarding environmental interaction.
“There’s a door, but it can’t be a 3D door because that would block the camera sensors,” she noted. “It’s a fake door, but you have to approach it as if it were real. You can’t wrap your hand around the handle, because that wouldn’t look realistic in the final animation.”
A Record-Breaking Debut
The intense preparation appears to have paid off. Resident Evil Requiem has become a massive commercial success for Capcom, with the company recently announcing that the title has surpassed six million copies sold. This achievement marks the fastest sales milestone in the history of the legendary horror franchise, cementing Sant’Albano’s place in Resident Evil history.
