Disney’s 20th Century officially announced that a brand-new feature film based on the iconic animated sitcom The Simpsons is currently in development, with a global theatrical release scheduled for 2027—marking two decades since the franchise’s cinematic debut.

A Long-Awaited Sequel
The announcement dropped on September 29 via social media, confirming that a sequel is finally moving forward. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Disney shared a teaser poster that offers a clear hint at what’s to come. The artwork depicts Homer Simpson reaching for a pink, sprinkle-covered doughnut shaped like the number 2, strongly suggesting the title The Simpsons Movie 2. The poster also features the playful tagline: “Homer’s combing back for seconds.”
The Legacy of Springfield
Since its debut in 1989, Matt Groening’s The Simpsons has cemented its status as the longest-running sitcom in television history. Despite ongoing debates regarding the series’ creative evolution since the late 1990s, it remains a cornerstone of Fox’s animation block and a global cultural phenomenon. The original 2007 film was a massive commercial success, raking in over $536 million worldwide. That production was notable for its distinct, high-detail art style and a narrative centered on the town of Springfield being encased in a giant dome due to an environmental crisis.
Overcoming Development Hurdles
Rumors regarding a second film have circulated for years. Previous attempts at a follow-up, including a concept centered on the fan-favorite alien duo Kang and Kodos, were scrapped because the writing team struggled to expand the premise into a feature-length narrative. It appears the creative team has finally cracked the story, successfully securing a path forward for the franchise’s return to the big screen. For now, fans will have to wait until 2027 to see what adventures await the Simpson family.
