FX is officially developing a television adaptation of the hit Ubisoft franchise Far Cry, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney set to headline the project alongside showrunner Noah Hawley.

A Surprise Leak Reveals Far Cry’s TV Future
The news surfaced after a premature post on Ubisoft’s official news website went live over the weekend. While the company quickly scrubbed the page, reports captured the details: the series will be developed for FX, the network behind It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Noah Hawley, known for his work on the Fargo TV series and the recent Alien: Earth, is attached as the showrunner for what is being described as an anthology-style series.
Why McElhenney and FX Are a Strategic Fit
While the prospect of adapting the chaotic, high-octane gameplay of Far Cry—notorious for its outpost stealth and explosive RPG combat—remains a creative challenge, FX’s established tone is widely viewed as a natural match for the franchise’s dark, psychological edge. Furthermore, McElhenney is no stranger to the gaming industry. He previously collaborated with Ubisoft on the Apple TV+ workplace comedy Mythic Quest, which he co-created alongside Megan Ganz and Charlie Day.
Creative Freedom in an Anthology Format
As Ubisoft continues work on its next Far Cry sequel, the franchise remains a massive priority in the ongoing industry-wide race to convert successful video game IP into prestige television. Unlike the Assassin’s Creed series, which relies on a more rigid lore, the Far Cry brand benefits from a loose structure. Because each game features entirely distinct characters and isolated settings, the show’s writers gain significant creative flexibility to explore the series’ staples—ranging from complex inventory-driven survival mechanics to the franchise’s signature charismatic, cult-leader villains.
