Valve may have shelved Gordon Freeman indefinitely, but fans have taken matters into their own hands by modding the iconic physicist into the developer’s new hero shooter, Deadlock.

The Free Man Enters Deadlock
For those who have long since given up on the prospect of Half-Life 3, the modding community is filling the void. While Valve shows little interest in bringing Gordon Freeman out of retirement, modder Grelgn has successfully inserted the legendary protagonist into Deadlock, proving that the scientist can still hold his own in modern Source 2 titles.

How the Mod Works
Currently available on Gamebanana, the mod functions as a skin replacement for the character Venator. It utilizes a high-quality model originally crafted by artists Komegatze, TGH, and Bruss for Half-Life: Alyx via Source 2 Filmmaker. As seen in gameplay demonstrations, Venator’s arsenal—which relies on firearms and a crossbow—aligns surprisingly well with Freeman’s classic combat style, even if the scientist looks slightly surreal traversing the aesthetic of Deadlock’s “Cursed Apple” map.
A New Look for the MOBA
Installing this mod requires sacrificing Venator’s original design, which may be a tough trade-off for players attached to the character’s rugged aesthetic. However, for those comfortable with the trade, it adds a layer of surrealism to the gameplay. Given Gordon’s history with interdimensional travel and time-bending anomalies, his presence in a world filled with necromancy and supernatural threats feels like a fitting, if unexpected, crossover.
The Freeman mod is part of a growing trend of skin swaps transforming Deadlock into a hub for crossover chaos. Other popular modifications include replacing existing characters with icons like Donkey Kong and Diddy, or even Hatsune Miku. While compatibility can vary with frequent game updates, the community continues to push the boundaries of what is possible within the Deadlock client.
