A new Neon Genesis Evangelion series is officially in production, featuring a script by Nier mastermind Yoko Taro, as revealed during the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebration in Japan.
What We Know About the Project
Details regarding the plot remain strictly under wraps. It is currently unclear whether the series serves as a prequel, a sequel, or an entirely new narrative thread. Given that the Rebuild films solidified the existence of multiple timelines, this project could potentially revisit the original story through an alternate lens or explore the aftermath of the many endings seen throughout the original show, The End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild cinematic tetralogy.
The Creative Team Behind the Vision
While Yoko Taro is handling the script, the directorial duties fall to Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toru Yatabe—both of whom are franchise veterans. Tsurumaki is widely recognized for his work on FLCL and the recent Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, while Yatabe has contributed to Chainsaw Man and collaborated with Tsurumaki on previous projects. Notably, original creator Hideaki Anno appears to be taking a step back, with his studio, Khara, producing the work. This shift suggests a new creative direction for the series following the definitive conclusion of Thrice Upon a Time.
Anniversary Revelations and Character Drama
The announcement served as the centerpiece for the “Evangelion: 30+; 30th Anniversary of Evangelion” festival. The event also featured a 13-minute short film starring Asuka, which has sparked intense fan debate. The short showcased a vision of Asuka married to protagonist Shinji with a child—a controversial sequence given the complex, often fraught nature of their relationship, though the short ultimately concludes with her rejecting the scenario.
