Sony and Amazon have officially cast Sons of Anarchy and God of War: Ragnarök actor Ryan Hurst to star as Kratos in the highly anticipated live-action God of War series, as reported by Deadline.

A Familiar Face in the Norse Realm
Hurst, who recently portrayed the formidable Thor in the 2022 God of War: Ragnarök video game, will transition from the role of an antagonist to the series lead. The upcoming production will focus on the narrative arcs of the modern God of War titles, chronicling Kratos’ journey as he navigates and battles figures from Norse mythology. While the search for the actor to play his son, Atreus, remains ongoing, Hurst’s deep familiarity with the source material offers a significant advantage for the adaptation.
Beyond the Blades of Chaos
Beyond his recent contributions to the God of War franchise, Hurst boasts an extensive acting resume. He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Opie in Sons of Anarchy and for his menacing turn as Beta in The Walking Dead and its spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead. His most recent work includes the role of Miles in the Netflix western series The Abandons. For fans eager to evaluate his range, various compilations of his performance as Thor in Ragnarök are currently available online.
Speculating on the Future of Atreus
With Hurst secured as Kratos, speculation regarding the rest of the cast has intensified. Given the production’s inclination toward the game’s existing talent, many are looking toward Sunny Suljic to potentially reprise his role as Atreus. While Suljic is now 20, his appearance could still align with the version of Atreus seen in Ragnarök, where the character had matured into his teenage years. Previously, rumors suggested that Christopher Judge, the iconic voice and motion-capture actor for Kratos in the Norse games, might take the live-action role; however, Judge effectively dismissed these claims in an X post last September.
Creative Leadership Behind the Camera
The God of War series is currently being developed under the guidance of writer, showrunner, and executive producer Ronald D. Moore. Moore brings a wealth of experience to the project, having been the creative force behind acclaimed science fiction pillars such as Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.
