Rivals of Aether 2 Adds Pirate Shark Who Shops Mid-Fight

A shark-man-pirate with a ring in his fin grins with his foot on a treasure chest.

Rivals of Aether 2 is expanding its roster with Slade, a pirate shark character capable of shopping for combat upgrades and fishing during active matches, with a scheduled release date of April 7, 2026.

A Familiar Playstyle Returns

While the original Rivals of Aether remains a PC staple for platform-fighter fans, its sequel has been missing the unique, gimmick-heavy energy found in characters like Shovel Knight—who famously gathered gems from foes to purchase mid-match upgrades. Slade, the newest addition to the Rivals of Aether 2 lineup, is set to revive that chaotic tactical depth with a nautical twist.

Meet Slade: The Sea-Faring Combatant

Slade is a rakish pirate shark wielding a cutlass, designed to keep opponents on their toes. Similar to the Shovel Knight playstyle, every successful strike generates currency that Slade can spend on powerful battlefield enhancements. Trailer highlights include an upgrade that allows him to cheat death once, and a grappling ability that yanks opponents toward him. With his mix of swordplay and projectile variety—including bombs, shurikens, and boomerangs—he promises to be an unpredictable presence in competitive play.

The Absurdity of Combat

Perhaps the most unconventional aspect of Slade’s moveset is his fishing mechanic. Players can literally reel in a fish from off-screen, deposit it into a treasure chest, and launch the flopping creature at downed opponents. This level of absurdity fits perfectly alongside the game’s recent additions, such as a magnet-powered dinosaur and an ant wrestler who utilizes folding chairs as weapons.

The development team continues to push the boundaries of the character roster, ensuring the game maintains its identity while competing against industry giants. Having previously appeared in the turn-based spinoff Dungeons of Aether, Slade is poised to bring his unique brand of maritime mayhem to the main stage when he drops on April 7, 2026.
