Walton Goggins, the star of Amazon’s hit series Fallout, has made his stance on the source material crystal clear: he has no intention of ever picking up a controller to play the games. Despite his central role as The Ghoul in the adaptation, the actor remains firm in his refusal to engage with the franchise’s interactive side.
A Hard “No” on Fallout Gaming
While Goggins has tackled diverse roles ranging from sketches on Saturday Night Live to high-profile commercial work, he draws a sharp line at Fallout gameplay. In a recent interview with PC Gamer ahead of the show’s second season, Goggins was emphatic about his decision: “No, I haven’t sat down to play the games. And I won’t. I won’t. I won’t play the games. I’m not interested.”
Protecting His Creative Vision
Goggins’ reluctance isn’t born from a dislike of the medium, but rather a desire to maintain the integrity of his performance. As the man behind Cooper Howard—the pre-war movie star turned post-apocalyptic Ghoul—he fears that experiencing the game firsthand might color his portrayal of the character.
“All of a sudden, I’m looking at this world from a very different perspective, and as something on a screen in which I am an avatar in. I don’t believe that I’m an avatar. I believe The Ghoul exists in the world. I believe that Cooper Howard exists in the world,” Goggins explained. He believes his best service to the fans is to remain fully immersed in the circumstances presented to him on set, rather than viewing the world through the lens of a player.
The Industry Divide on Source Material
This creative choice highlights an ongoing debate in Hollywood regarding how much source material adaptations truly require from their cast. While some stars, like Brie Larson and Alex Garland, are vocal enthusiasts of the games they adapt, others find the gameplay experience secondary to their acting process.
The trend extends to behind-the-camera talent as well. God of War showrunner Ronald D. Moore previously admitted that the 2018 title proved too difficult to master, while Helldivers 2 director Justin Lin has also bypassed playing the game. In the case of Lin, Helldivers 2 CEO Shams Jorjani defended the decision, citing trust in the director’s professional track record over his gaming experience.
For Goggins, the separation between his character and the game is intentional. Even as his version of The Ghoul is immortalized within Fallout 76 as a playable character, the actor remains committed to keeping the digital world and his performance strictly apart.
