Hideo Kojima Makes Surprise Cameo in Zootopia 2

11 months ago (Last updated: 2 weeks ago)

Legendary game developer Hideo Kojima, the visionary creator behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, is set to make a rare acting appearance in the Japanese dub of Disney’s Zootopia 2, arriving in theaters overseas on December 5.

A Cinematic Passion Projects

Kojima has long worn his love for cinema on his sleeve—famously stating in his Twitter bio that “70% of my body is made of movies.” While his influence on the medium of video games is undeniable, his acting resume remains brief. This latest venture into voice acting marks a unique expansion of his creative footprint, as he lends his voice to a character within the bustling, anthropomorphic world of Zootopia.

Meet Paul Molebrandt: A Small Role with Big Impact

In the film, Kojima provides the voice for Paul Molebrandt, an IT specialist working within the Zootopia Police Department. Although the role consists of only a few lines, the character serves as a pivotal element in the film’s signature visual comedy. The Zootopia franchise is renowned for its creative use of scale, constantly highlighting the physical challenges of a city shared by animals of vastly different sizes.

As a mole, Paul is significantly smaller than the primary cast, creating a comedic juxtaposition that anchors several key scenes. While Josh Gad—famed for his performance as Olaf in Frozen—voices the character in the original English version, Kojima’s presence in the Japanese dub brings a distinct flair to the IT technician’s brief but memorable appearances.

Box Office Success and Future Potential

Zootopia 2 has already proven to be a massive commercial triumph for Disney, shattering expectations by crossing the half-billion-dollar mark at the global box office in its first week alone. With the sequel’s post-credits scene already teasing a potential third installment—expected to arrive in the 2030s—it is entirely possible that fans could see the return of Kojima’s character in the future.
