Robert Downey Jr. officially signaled a changing of the guard for the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a recent appearance on Good Morning America. The actor surprised Ironheart stars Dominique Thorne and Anthony Ramos with a video message, offering his public blessing to the franchise’s next generation while maintaining his signature wit.
A Royal Blessing with a Comedic Twist
In a recorded clip—potentially filmed on the set of Avengers: Doomsday—the man who defined Tony Stark for over a decade expressed his genuine enthusiasm for the upcoming series. Addressing Dominique Thorne directly, Downey Jr. stated, “Ms. Thorne, I couldn’t be happier than seeing you bring Riri Williams to life.”
Ever the showman, Downey Jr. couldn’t resist a jab at his own future in the MCU. Referencing the green hood worn by Anthony Ramos’s character, Parker Robbins, in the Ironheart trailer, the actor joked that he hoped the costume choice didn’t signal a plan to replace him as Doctor Doom.
The Arc Reactor Connection
The sentiment turned from playful to poignant in the final moments of the message. Downey Jr. formed his fingers into the shape of an Arc Reactor, declaring, “Iron Man loves Ironheart.” This gesture carries added weight given Thorne’s previous account of the veteran actor’s mentorship.
Thorne revealed that the support began long before this public broadcast. Shortly after wrapping production in Chicago, she received a personal call from Downey Jr. In a past interview with Empire, she recalled the interaction: “He told me how excited he was and that he’s rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It’s really reassuring to know you’re not embarrassing Iron Man.”
A Long-Standing Advocacy for Riri Williams
Downey Jr.’s support for the character is not a recent development. His advocacy dates back to June 2019, when he spoke at a gala at the Gene Siskel Film Center. Nearly a year and a half before Marvel officially announced the Ironheart series, he publicly stated that Riri Williams belonged in the MCU. His vision eventually materialized when the character made her debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
While this Good Morning America appearance serves as a real-world endorsement rather than the in-universe holographic tutorial fans have speculated about, it serves a critical purpose. As the MCU enters its next phase, this public passing of the torch provides a clear signal to the fanbase that the legacy of Iron Man is safely entrusted to the next generation of heroes.
