The iconic basketball-playing golden retriever is officially returning to the big screen, as Cineverse and Air Bud Entertainment announced that the 15th installment of the franchise, Air Bud Returns, will hit theaters in 2026.
A Franchise That Refuses to Quit
The announcement on July 24 confirms that the long-running family franchise—which originated in 1997—is expanding yet again. Since the success of the original Air Bud, which was independently produced before being acquired by Disney, the property has ballooned into a massive series. Surprisingly, the franchise has already produced 14 sequels and spin-offs, many of which pivoted away from the basketball-centric theme of the original film.
The Creative Force Behind the Return
Robert Vince, a veteran of the series, is set to write and direct the upcoming installment. Vince’s history with the brand is extensive; he served as a producer on the 1997 original and has been the primary architect for the franchise ever since, having produced all 14 sequels and directed or written 10 of them.
What to Expect from the New Installment
Production for Air Bud Returns is scheduled to begin this summer in British Columbia, Canada. Regarding the creative direction of the film, Robert Vince stated in a press release that the movie aims to balance nostalgia with a fresh narrative.
“Air Bud Returns isn’t just another sequel or remake—it’s a unique story,” Vince explained. “This movie will engage nostalgic Air Bud fans while introducing a new generation to the beloved basketball-playing golden retriever, Buddy. It builds upon the legacy of the OG Air Bud with all the fun, the magic, heartwarming scenes, and Buddy playing basketball. More than anything, it’s a deeply human story about a dog and boy, centered on themes of adaptation, redemption, and teamwork.”
Looking Ahead
While the franchise has historically relied on low-budget, direct-to-video releases, the theatrical nature of this new project suggests a push to revitalize the brand. Regardless of critical reception or audience anticipation, the production is moving forward, marking the next chapter in a series that has persisted for nearly three decades.
