Netflix and Warner Bros. have officially greenlit an eight-episode live-action Scooby-Doo series, an origin story centered on a young Scooby witnessing a murder before disappearing, marking a gritty new direction for the iconic mystery-solving franchise.
From Animation to Live-Action Mystery
First reported by Variety on March 26, the project has officially moved into production. While a specific release date has yet to be finalized, the series is being spearheaded by showrunners Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg. The duo, operating under their production banner Midnight Radio, are also serving as executive producers for the untitled adaptation, which was initially rumored to be in development throughout 2024.
A Shift in Tone for Mystery Inc.
The premise suggests a darker, more dramatic take on the classic cartoon. The official logline teases a narrative where the formation of Mystery Inc. is triggered by a traumatic event: Scooby-Doo witnessing a homicide. Whether this leads to a grim procedural or follows the franchise’s traditional trope—where the “death” is eventually revealed to be a elaborate hoax orchestrated by a disgruntled janitor or a wealthy landowner—remains to be seen. Fans can likely expect the signature mask-pulling reveal, albeit framed within a more mature, live-action aesthetic.
High Hopes from Studio Executives
Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs for Warner Bros. Television, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership with Netflix and Berlanti Productions. “It’s no mystery why audiences continue to love these iconic characters after more than a half century,” White stated, noting the studio’s commitment to introducing Mystery Inc. to a new generation. Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of scripted series, echoed this sentiment, confirming that the streaming giant is eager to bring the franchise to television in a live-action format for the first time.
