Before his passing in January 2025, legendary filmmaker David Lynch was secretly developing a mysterious Netflix series titled Unrecorded Night, a project that his longtime cinematographer Peter Deming recently confirmed would have served as a deep exploration of the “Old Hollywood” mythos.
A Final Love Letter to Los Angeles
Lynch, known for his surrealist masterpieces, had been quietly working on the project since at least 2020, when it was first identified under the working title Wisteria. While rumors swirled for years regarding a potential Cannes debut or the involvement of frequent collaborator Kyle MacLachlan, the true nature of the project remained shrouded in mystery. According to Deming, the series was designed to be a definitive addition to Lynch’s Los Angeles canon, thematically linking back to the atmospheric complexities of Mulholland Drive and INLAND EMPIRE.
Beyond the World of Twin Peaks
Addressing fan speculation, Deming clarified that Unrecorded Night was explicitly not a continuation of Twin Peaks. Instead, the director was moving toward a new format. Lynch had expressed frustration with the state of the modern film industry and his own declining health, leading him to pivot away from traditional feature films. He viewed this project not as a standard episodic series, but as one singular, expansive narrative. As Deming noted, Lynch’s philosophy had shifted: “I’m not going to make any more movies. I’m just going to make longer stories because I love the longer story.”
The Pandemic’s Impact on Production
The path to production was fraught with obstacles. Deming revealed that the team had only managed to scout locations once before the COVID-19 pandemic halted progress. This interruption effectively killed the momentum required to bring the ambitious project to life before Lynch’s death. While the script remains a “holy grail” for cinephiles and devoted fans, Deming’s insights offer a bittersweet confirmation that the visionary director remained dedicated to his craft and his unique brand of cinematic storytelling until his final days.
